Dolly Parton Now Singing With the Angels

In 2019, the New York Times ran an article under the headline, “Is There Anything We Can All Agree On? Yes: Dolly Parton.” Today we can all agree that her recent passing is a true cultural moment.

 

According to her representative, she died after a “brief battle with cancer” at a hospital in Nashville on August 25, at the age of 80.

 

 What explains her impact on millions of lives today?

 

It’s not just her astounding achievements: She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2005. She won eleven Grammy Awards, three Emmy Awards, and an honorary humanitarian Oscar last year.

 

It’s not just her background: Dolly was born on January 19, 1946, the fourth of twelve children in a one-room cabin on the banks of the Little Pigeon River in Sevier County, Tennessee. My wife and I saw a replica of the cabin when we visited her theme park some years ago, and we remarked on what it must have been like to raise so many children in so small a space. Her father was a tenant farmer who was so poor that he had to pay the doctor who attended her birth with a sack of cornmeal.

 

She grew up without plumbing, heat, or electricity, but with a passion for music. When she was around five years of age, she wrote her first song. She began singing on radio and television at the age of ten. She made her recording debut and first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry at the age of thirteen. Five years later, she became the first person in her family to graduate from high school.

 

She went on to record roughly ninety Top 40 country hits. The best-selling country music artist of all time, she sold more than 160 million records worldwide and wrote more than three thousand songs. 

 

As much as the world knew Dolly Parton for her music, it was her faith that empowered what she wrote, sang, and did.

 

“Every single day, before I do anything, I wake up and I thank God.” She stated, “I always pray that he’ll let me uplift mankind and glorify him.”

 

 Parton never credited her accomplishments solely to talent or determination.

 

“My faith impacts everything that I do because I do believe that, through God, all things are possible,” Parton previously said.

 

Her marriage was another area where Parton saw God’s hand. Parton previously described Carl Dean, her husband of nearly six decades, as a “God-send,” believing God knew the kind of man she would need beside her as her career grew into something neither could have imagined. Dean died in March 2025 at 82.

 

Among her many charitable endeavors, her Imagination Library is especially significant. She established it in 1995; to date, more than three hundred million books have been distributed to babies and small children.

 

Dolly explained:

 

When I was growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, I knew my dreams would come true. I know there are children in your community with their own dreams. They dream of becoming a doctor or an inventor or a minister. Who knows, maybe there is a little girl whose dream is to be a writer and singer.

The seeds of these dreams are often found in books, and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world.

Dolly Parton knew from childhood who she was made to be by God and never departed from that mission. She viewed herself first and foremost as a songwriter, telling the New York Times in 2002, “Writing’s just as natural to me as getting up and cooking breakfast. I ain’t never far away from a pencil and paper or a tape recorder. I write every day, even when I’m on a plane, in the tub, or on the bus. It burns in me.”

When we are true to our God-given purpose, loving God and people through our gifts and passion, his Spirit will connect our hearts to others. There will be an authenticity to our words and actions, our character and conduct. And like the first believers, others will know that we have “been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).

Parton’s passing reminds us that even the brightest stars eventually return home. Yet her influence—through music, charity, and unwavering commitment to lifting others—will continue to inspire future generations. She lived a life that mattered, touching hearts and changing lives through talent given by God and used for good.
