Archaeology just continues to prove that Jesus’ fame spread wide and far long before modern-day Christianity.
In a report by the Daily Mail, an archaeological find known as the “Jesus Cup” could potentially be the first ever reference point to Christ. The bowl, which was found off of the Egyptian coast in 2008, was found through an excavation of the ancient Alexandria’s harbor.
As the Daily Mail noted, the bowl has been remarkably preserved, just missing a handle and has the Greek words, “Dia Chrstou O Goistais,” which means “Christ the chanter.”
The artifact is believed by New Testament scholar Dr. Jeremiah Johnston to date back to the first century during the time period when Jesus was crucified.
“Jesus’ reputation was that he was a healer, miracle worker and exorcist,” Johnston said on TBN. “This Jesus Cup gives evidence to that legacy.” He further said that “Jesus, through his own short ministry of just three years [had] others invoking his name because it had so much power.”
This fits well into the fact that Alexandria was an area where Christianity, Judaism and paganism met together, and it is probable that the people of Alexandria were well aware of the miracles that Jesus performed, including turning water into wine.
For believers today, discoveries like the “Jesus Cup” remind us that the name of Jesus has always carried undeniable power. Long before church buildings or denominational structures, the fame of Jesus spread by word of mouth, testimony and the undeniable evidence of miracles. Archaeology is once again confirming what the Word has always declared: the impact of Christ could not be silenced, even in the earliest days. Each new discovery is not simply about history—it is a prophetic reminder that the gospel is alive, unshaken, and continuing to reach the nations.
