San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is turning to God following a season-ending right ankle break that required surgery and rehab.

Lance, who sustained the injury recently during a game against the Seattle Seahawks, took to social media Tuesday to share his faith and an update for fans. The NFL star posted an image of him lying in a hospital bed smiling and making a peace sign. His right foot and leg cast can be seen in the photo as well.

Lance opened the post with text from Romans 8:18. The verse reads, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (NIV).

The quarterback, who appears to be in good spirits, all things considered, thanked fans and loved ones for prayers and positive messages.

“Truly appreciate all of the messages and prayers. Surgery was a success, and I am ready to attack this rehab process,” Lance wrote. “We will never understand why, but I trust that it is all a part of His plan, and I will be back better than ever. This chapter is going to make the story even greater!”

This positive reaction isn’t surprising considering Lance’s past proclamations about his faith. He calls himself a “child of God” on his Twitter profile and has openly addressed his faith in interviews.

“Football is not who I am, it’s what I do,” he told Yahoo! Sports in 2020. “I’m obviously going to put everything possible into it because that’s what I love to do. But at the end of the day, I think God put that in my plan to use it as my platform.”

Lance often tweets and shares Bible verses and Christian ideals as well.

In 2021, he shared Philippians 2:5-8, which reads, “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though He was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, He gave up His divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being” (NLT).

Continue to pray for Lance as he recovers from this severe injury.
