Christian Leaders Respond to James Comey's Firing

1 Mins read

On Wednesday, May 9, President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Comey has been at the center of controversy throughout the 2016 presidential election, which continued even after the election was over. Although some have alleged that Comey strategically released information regarding then presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server for confidential government correspondence, and that this swayed the election in Donald Trump’s favor, the President’s decision to fire Comey has unearthed new allegations.

In the wake of this controversy, Christian leaders added their voices to the debate.

Al Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, notes that Democrats were previously the ones calling for Comey’s resignation or termination, but after the election, they changed their views and are now hitting back at Trump for firing Comey.

Former Arkansas governor and Christian minister Mike Huckabee echoed Mohler’s words: “CNN now stands for Cardiac Care Network because their ppl are having heart attacks over Trump doing what Dems once demanded-fire Comey,” posted Huckabee, according to The Christian Post.

The majority of Christian leaders seemed to share a consensus that Trump was justified in firing Comey, despite claims that he did so in order to avoid a further investigation into possible collusion with Russia.

Right now, we can only echo Al Mohler’s statement that Comey’s firing is only chapter one in this political era, and chapter two will be when the President appoints a new FBI Director.
